With Thanksgiving just a few days away and Christmas not far behind, the holidays are on everybody’s mind. 2020 has been a rough year for all of us including the small businesses that make up our community. As we think about all of the pets and pet parents in our lives this year, shopping at local businesses for pet gifts in the Greater Waterbury area seems like a no brainer!
Whether you have chihuahuas or Great Danes to shop for this year or just all of the amazing pet people in our lives, we’ve picked out five of our favorite local, small businesses that carry amazing gifts for pets and their families alike!
Thomaston Feed
Located in Thomaston, Thomaston Feed is a popular family-owned store with something for dogs, cats and the people that love them. While Thomaston Feed’s main focus is providing quality, nutritious food and a holistic approach to pet health, they also carry toys, crates, supplies, leashes and more. The store is dog friendly so you can bring your pal along, too!
Shopping for a pet lover in your life? Consider checking out the different types of pet home decor they carry (we’ve seen some really cute treat jars!) or grabbing a gift card so they can pick out what they’d like with their four-legged friend.

Rooted Relief and Wellness
Rooted Relief and Wellness, based out of Watertown, is owned by our very own Pet Care Specialist, Bethany! Rooted Relief focuses on the health benefits of CBD for dogs and people alike. Bethany started the business as Black and White Dog Bakery in honor of her own two pups, Dax and Piper, and carries a variety of different CBD treats.
After seeing how much CBD had improved her own pups’ lives she explored other products. Beyond just dog treats, check out their stock of variety of oils, gummies, creams/sticks, lip balms for the humans in your life, too.
Blissful Moment Photography
Blissful Moment Photography is a Naugatuck-based small business providing professional photoshoots of the animals (and people!) in our lives. What could be a better gift?
Owned and operated by our very own Pet Care Specialist Anna, get the photos you’ve been dreaming of digitally or in print. The shot above was done in a local park of RCO Pet Care’s resident mascots, Owl and Rocco.

Better Beagle Co
The Better Beagle Co is located in Oxford’s beautiful Quarry Walk plaza. The humans behind Better Beagle have a passion for canine health and wellness which inspires their holistic approach to pet care and supplies. They carry a wide variety of food brands, treats and natural chews. If you have a pet with allergies or special needs they are a great place to visit!
The Better Beagle Co supports local rescues and occasionally hold adoption events. This small business cares about our local pet community and is a great place to shop for pet gifts in Greater Waterbury this holiday season!
Mel Makes Treats
Although a little outside of our service area, we couldn’t help but mention Mel Makes Treats based out of Cheshire. Mel makes fresh, all-natural and preservative-free dog treats of all kinds. Custom lettering, cookies in the shape of pumpkin spice lattes, different flavors, birthday cakes… you name it, she can do it! I

Jessica graduated magna cum laude with her Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut in 2015. Her animal-centered coursework here included courses in animal behavior, health and disease management, anatomy and physiology, basic through advanced nutrition and feeding, genetics, comparative exercise physiology, endocrinology, reproductive physiology and equine science.
Her resume also boasts hands-on work experience managing horse farms, working with animals ranging from prairie dogs and bison to South American Primates at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, as well as care, training and management of domestic animals from hamsters to cows.
Outside of RCO, Jessica is the dog mom of five (Rocco, Luna, Owl, River and Peanut), enjoys reading, walking and training her own dogs, visiting Disney World and pursuing further educational opportunities.
